To ‘Beaver’ or not to ‘Beaver’
Will Mel Gibson turn up tonight for the out of competition screening of “The Beaver“? That is indeed the question.
The embattled star of Jodie Foster‘s latest directorial effort did not show up for the press conference this afternoon, prompting concern that he may not be here for the red carpet at 7:30pm Cannes time.
(At a press conference in April, where Thierry Fremaux announced the official selection, he said Gibson would be in town to support the film – he later confirmed it to me on the phone).
In the past few days, there have been whispers he was not going to travel here, which have now increased in volume due to the press conference no-show, but most people actually believe he will be here tonight.
It makes sense why he wouldn’t want to sit for the press conference where he would run the risk of facing international journalists – no matter how cinematically-minded – armed with questions relating to his personal life.
If he just does the red carpet, he puts himself in the paparazzi firing line, but that’s about it.
I’ll report back later with an update.
